My name is Jim Preston. A few years ago I was looking for an interesting science-related podcast and I found Skeptoid. I enjoyed it so much that I went looking for other skeptical podcasts and found The Skeptics Guide to the Universe. I heard Steve and The Rogues talk about The Amazing Meeting, and decided that I wanted to go to see what it was all about. I met a lot of people who do good things; James Randi himself, Steve Novella, Evan Bernstein, Brian Dunning, Jamie Ian Swiss, Eugenie Scott, Harriet Hall, Jay Diamond, Ross Blocher, Susan Gerbic, Yau-Man Chan, and many others. I had not know that there was such a wide world of skepticism and a “Skeptical Movement” out there.
I’m not an activist. I don’t have the drive of those people. But I wanted to do something. And then this idea came to me. How about a website that celebrates the good, the positive, the successes? The small victories where you turn a friend or family member back from the brink of pseudoscience, rationally argue someone out of spending hundreds of dollars on unproven “cures”, use evidence (or the lack thereof) to turn a bigfoot believer into a bigfoot skeptic.
This site is kind of an experiment. Unlike other blogs, it can’t be successful if it’s just me, it needs contributions. Submit your story.
